Starting in Coniston, we quickly start ascending through the coppermines valley and past the interesting old mine workings. We skim past Low Water, don’t be fooled – it’s quite high up, and continue the steep ascent to reach the summit of the Old Man of Coniston (803 m/2,633 ft).
We follow the undulating ridge with fantastic views past Brim Fell and Little Great How Crags onto Swirl How (also 803m – but this is disputed!). now begins our descent down the Prison Band (!) past Levers water and back through more historical mining areas with small mine entrances dotted about.
Return to Coniston for tea and cakes or maybe beer and crisps.
